Shopify is a Canadian e-commerce company headquartered in Ottawa, Ontario. It is also the name of its proprietary e-commerce platform for online stores and retail point-of-sale systems. Shopify offers online retailers a suite of services “including payments, marketing, shipping and customer engagement tools to simplify the process of running an online store for small merchants.

Shopify was founded in 2004 by Tobias Lütke, Daniel Weinand, and Scott Lake after attempting to open Snowdevil, an online store for snowboarding equipment. Lütke used the software to launch Snowdevil’s website, and then he and his partners realized that it could be used by other businesses to launch their own websites. Shopify was launched as a web application in 2006.

The company has been profitable since 2009. In 2015, Shopify acquired Boltmade, a design agency based in Waterloo, Ontario.

In 2016, Shopify partnered with Visa to offer Shopify Payments in the United States. In 2018, Shopify acquired Toronto-based artificial intelligence startup Kit CRM Inc., which developed a customer relations management tool.

Today, Shopify is publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange with the ticker symbol SHOP. As of June 2020, Tobias Lütke is the CEO of Shopify with a net worth of $1.8 billion.
