How Much RAM Should Photoshop Use?

RAM is the most important factor in Photoshop’s performance. The more RAM you have, the more Photoshop can do for you.

PRO TIP: If you are using Photoshop, it is important to be aware of how much RAM you are using. If you are using too much RAM, it can slow down your computer and cause problems.

If you’re working with large images, or using complex Photoshop features, you’ll need more RAM. It’s often helpful to have double the amount of RAM that your system recommends.

32-bit versions of Photoshop can use a maximum of 4 GB of RAM, while 64-bit versions can use much more. If you’re using a 32-bit version of Photoshop, adding more RAM will help improve performance.

If you’re not sure how much RAM your computer has, or how much it can hold, you can check by going to About This Mac from the Apple menu, and then selecting System Report. Under Hardware, select Memory. The amount of memory installed is listed at the top, and the amount of memory that can be added is listed in the Memory Slots section.
