How to Setup Free Trials With WooCommerce Subscriptions?

Last updated on October 1, 2022 @ 5:17 pm

There are two types of subscriptions in WooCommerce: physical products and virtual products. You can offer free trials for both types of subscriptions.

For a physical product subscription, the free trial period is the time between when the customer signs up for the subscription and when they are first billed for the product. For a virtual product subscription, the free trial period is the time between when the customer signs up for the subscription and when they are first given access to the product.

To offer a free trial for a physical product subscription, you need to set up a recurring shipping schedule. To do this, go to WooCommerce > Settings > Subscriptions and select “Enable recurring shipping charges”. This will allow you to set up a shipping schedule for your subscription products.

Next, go to WooCommerce > Products and edit the product you want to offer a free trial for. In the “General” tab, scroll down to the “Subscription” section and select “Enable this product as a subscription”. Then, in the “Recurring Shipping” section, select “Free Trial” from the “Trial Period” dropdown menu.

PRO TIP: Please be aware that setting up free trials with WooCommerce Subscriptions can be tricky and may not work as intended. Make sure to thoroughly test your setup before making it live on your site.

Save your changes and you’re all set! Customers who sign up for this subscription will now have a free trial period before they are first billed for the product.

To offer a free trial for a virtual product subscription, go to WooCommerce > Products and edit the product you want to offer a free trial for.

Offering free trials is a great way to encourage customers to sign up for your subscriptions. By giving them access to your products before they are billed, you can give them a taste of what they’ll be getting with their subscription. This is an effective way to increase conversion rates and reduce churn.
