Figma is a vector graphics editor and prototyping tool – the first interface design tool with real-time collaboration.
Figma was created by Dylan Field and Evan Wallace in 2012, while they were both students at Stanford University. The two had previously worked together on an online education startup called OmniUpdate.
After graduation, the duo moved to San Francisco to work on their next project: a new way to design user interfaces. They were inspired by Google Docs, which allows multiple users to work on a document at the same time. They wanted to create something similar for interface design.
Figma launched in 2015, as a web-based application. It was quickly adopted by designers at some of the world’s biggest tech companies, including Google, Facebook, and Netflix.
In 2017, Figma raised $14 million in a Series A funding round led by Sequoia Capital. Since then, the company has been rapidly expanding its team and its features.
Today, Figma is used by millions of people around the world – from individual designers to large corporations. And it’s only getting more popular: in 2019, Figma was named one of the best places to work in the Bay Area by the San Francisco Business Times.
Figma is changing the way people design interfaces – and it’s just getting started.
