Is Azure AD the same as ADFS?

Last updated on September 25, 2022 @ 11:22 am

Azure AD and ADFS are two different systems that manage user identities and access permissions. Azure AD is a cloud-based service that provides a single sign-on experience for users in organizations that have adopted Microsoft Office 365. ADFS is a server-based system that provides authentication and authorization services for Windows Server 2008 and later. Azure AD can be used in conjunction with ADFS to provide authentication and authorization for cloud-based applications and services. Azure AD is more generalized and can be used with a wider range of applications and services than ADFS. ADFS is more focused on Windows Server and can be more difficult to use with other applications and services. Azure AD is the successor to Active Directory Federation Services (ADFS). ADFS was released in March 2011 and was superseded by Azure AD in September 2016.

PRO TIP: Warning: Azure AD is not the same as ADFS. While both are identity management solutions, they are designed for different purposes. Azure AD is a cloud-based solution that provides users with access to resources, while ADFS is a on-premises solution that allows users to authenticate to applications.

Azure AD can be used in conjunction with ADFS to provide authentication and authorization for cloud-based applications and services.
