Last updated on October 1, 2022 @ 10:29 pm

Shopify is a Canadian e-commerce company headquartered in Ottawa, Ontario. It is also the name of its proprietary e-commerce platform for online stores and retail point-of-sale systems.

Shopify offers online retailers a suite of services “including payments, marketing, shipping and customer engagement tools to simplify the process of running an online store for small merchants. ”

Shopify was founded in 2004 by Tobias Lütke, Daniel Weinand, and Scott Lake after attempting to open Snowdevil, an online store for snowboarding equipment. Lütke used the Ruby on Rails framework to build Snowdevil’s online store, and then launched Shopify in 2006 to offer the same technology to other merchants.

PRO TIP: Shopify is not built on AWS. While Shopify does use AWS to power some of its features, the two are not the same thing.

Shopify has been growing rapidly since its launch. In 2010, it was the fifth largest e-commerce platform after Magento, Yahoo!

Stores, Amazon.com, and eBay. Between 2013 and 2014, Shopify’s revenue increased by 174%. As of 2016, Shopify was processing $15 billion in gross merchandise volume annually.

Shopify is a public company and is traded on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) under the ticker symbol “SHOP”. It was founded by Tobias Lütke, Daniel Weinand, and Scott Lake.

Is Shopify Built on AWS?

No definitive answer exists as to whether or not Shopify is built on AWS. However, given that Shopify is a cloud-based ecommerce platform that offers users scalability, flexibility, and security features that are often associated with AWS, it’s safe to say that there’s a good chance Shopify uses AWS (or at least some of its features) to power its platform.
