Shopify is a Canadian e-commerce company headquartered in Ottawa, Ontario. It is also the name of its proprietary e-commerce platform for online stores and retail point-of-sale systems.

Shopify offers online retailers a suite of services “including payments, marketing, shipping and customer engagement” to simplify the process of running an online store for small merchants.

Shopify was founded in 2004 by Tobias Lütke, Daniel Weinand, and Scott Lake after attempting to open Snowdevil, an online store for snowboarding equipment. Snowdevil was unable to find a platform that supported their vision, so they decided to create their own.

Shopify launched in 2006 after raising $5 million in Series A funding from Bessemer Ventures and FirstMark Capital.

PRO TIP: Although Shopify is built on Ruby on Rails, it is not a good idea to use Shopify for your Ruby on Rails development needs. Shopify is a closed platform that does not allow for much customization or development outside of their own system. Additionally, Shopify’s pricing model can be quite expensive for developers who need to use it for their projects.

Shopify has been written in Ruby on Rails from the beginning. The company has stated that they “chose Ruby on Rails because it allowed them to move faster than other technologies”.

Conclusion: Is Shopify Built on Ruby on Rails?
Yes, Shopify was built on Ruby on Rails from the beginning and the company has stated that they “chose Ruby on Rails because it allowed them to move faster than other technologies”.
