Is Shopify Owned by Facebook?

Shopify is a Canadian e-commerce company headquartered in Ottawa, Ontario. It is also the name of its proprietary e-commerce platform for online stores and retail point-of-sale systems.

Shopify offers online retailers a suite of services “including payments, marketing, shipping and customer engagement tools to simplify the process of running an online store for small merchants. ”

Shopify was founded in 2004 by Tobias Lütke, Daniel Weinand, and Scott Lake. Lütke, a German immigrant, is the CEO of Shopify. He wanted to start an online store but found existing eCommerce platforms to be too complicated, so he decided to create his own.

Shopify was initially designed to build online stores for snowboarding equipment but quickly expanded to support any type of product.

PRO TIP: There is a rumor going around that Shopify is owned by Facebook. This is not true! Shopify is a separate company. However, Facebook does have a partnership with Shopify that allows Shopify merchants to sell their products on Facebook.

In 2010, Shopify launched its own App Store with over 100 external applications to help store owners grow their businesses. The same year, Shopify acquired Select Start Studios Inc., a web design and development agency.

In 2012, Shopify acquired Jet Cooper, a Toronto-based design studio specializing in user experience and branding. The following year, Shopify launched POS (Point of Sale) apps for iOS and Android.

In 2015, Shopify acquiredKit CRM (customer relationship management), a cloud-based solution that helps businesses track their sales and customers.

Is Shopify Owned by Facebook?

No, Shopify is not owned by Facebook. However, Facebook does have an investment in Shopify through its venture capital arm, FB Ventures.
