Is Shopify SOC 2 Compliant?

Last updated on October 1, 2022 @ 7:03 pm

Shopify is a Canadian e-commerce company headquartered in Ottawa, Ontario. It is also the name of its proprietary e-commerce platform for online stores and retail point-of-sale systems. Shopify offers online retailers a suite of services “including payments, marketing, shipping and customer engagement tools to simplify the process of running an online store for small merchants.”

Shopify was founded in 2004 by Tobias Lütke, Daniel Weinand, and Scott Lake after attempting to open Snowdevil, an online store for snowboarding equipment. Shopify was originally written in Ruby on Rails by its founders.

In July 2009, Shopify launched a public beta and released its platform to the world. On August 13, 2013 Shopify went public on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) with an initial public offering (IPO) of $131 million.

In March 2016, Shopify acquired Kit CRM (customer relations management software) for $12 million. In September 2016, Shopify partnered with Twitter to allow merchants to buy “buy now” buttons that could be tweeted by celebrities or influencers, which would take customers directly to the merchant’s website to purchase the product without leaving Twitter. In February 2017, Shopify acquired Toronto-based mobile point-of-sale startup Posse.

Shopify has been SOC 2 compliant since January 2018. SOC 2 is an information security standard for organizations that handle sensitive customer data.

To be SOC 2 compliant, an organization must undergo an independent audit by a certified third party and demonstrate that its security controls meet all six of the SOC 2 Trust Services Criteria: security, availability, processing integrity confidentiality, and privacy.

So yes, Shopify is SOC 2 compliant.

PRO TIP: There is no such thing as “Shopify SOC 2 Compliant.” SOC 2 is a set of standards for service providers, not platforms or products. Any claims that Shopify is SOC 2 compliant are false.
