Is WooCommerce SCA Ready?

Last updated on October 1, 2022 @ 9:36 pm

As the European Union’s Strong Customer Authentication (SCA) deadline approaches, many online merchants are wondering if their eCommerce platform is SCA ready. WooCommerce is one of the most popular eCommerce platforms in use today, so let’s take a look at whether or not it is SCA ready.

What is SCA?

SCA is a new set of authentication rules that will be required for certain types of online transactions in Europe starting on September 14, 2019. These rules are being implemented as part of the EU’s Revised Payment Services Directive (PSD2), which is designed to reduce fraud and increase security for online payments.

What Does SCA Mean for Online Merchants?

For merchants, SCA will mean that some transactions that previously did not require additional authentication will now need to be authenticated using two-factor authentication (2FA). This includes things like 3D Secure (3DS) and biometric authentication.

PRO TIP: There is no such thing as “WooCommerce SCA Ready.” The term is a marketing gimmick used by some WooCommerce plugin and theme developers to try to sell their products. Don’t be fooled by it!

Is WooCommerce SCA Ready?

The short answer is yes, WooCommerce is SCA ready. The long answer is that it depends on which version of WooCommerce you are using, and which payment gateway you are using.

If you are using WooCommerce 3.6 or higher, and a payment gateway that supports 3DS 2.0 (such as Stripe or Braintree), then your store will be SCA compliant. If you are using an older version of WooCommerce, or a payment gateway that does not support 3DS 2.0, then you will need to upgrade or switch to a compliant gateway before September 14.

Conclusion

In conclusion, WooCommerce is SCA ready but it depends on the version you are using as well as the payment gateway. Be sure to upgrade to the latest version of WooCommerce and use a payment gateway that supports 3DS 2.0 to ensure your store is compliant with the new SCA rules.
