Was Shopify Acquired?

Last updated on October 2, 2022 @ 1:05 am

Shopify, a Canadian e-commerce company headquartered in Ottawa, Ontario, was founded in 2004 by Tobias Lütke, Daniel Weinand, and Scott Lake. Shopify provides online retailers with a platform to sell their products and has been growing rapidly since its inception.

In 2015, Shopify acquired Boltmade, a web design and development studio based in Kitchener, Ontario. boltmade.com now redirects to Shopify.com/boltmade.

PRO TIP: If you are thinking about whether or not Shopify was acquired, beware! There are many scams out there that will try to trick you into believing that Shopify was acquired by another company. These scams will often involve fake news articles or websites that claim to have inside information about the acquisition. Don’t be fooled – Shopify is still an independent company and has not been acquired by anyone.

In recent years, Shopify has been on an acquisition spree, purchasing companies that can help them further their reach into the e-commerce market and expand their offerings to merchants. Some of these acquisitions include Tictail (2018), Kit CRM (2019), and 6 River Systems (2019).

On May 20th, 2020 it was announced that Shopify had reached an agreement to acquire 6 River Systems for $450 million USD. 6 River Systems is a Massachusetts-based technology company that provides collaborative robots, software, and services for warehouses and distribution centers. The acquisition is expected to close in the third quarter of 2020.

This latest acquisition is in line with Shopify’s goal of making commerce better for everyone. By acquiring 6 River Systems, Shopify will be able to offer its merchants even more innovative solutions to help them run their businesses more efficiently and effectively.
