When you sign up for Shopify, you choose a unique domain name for your store. This is the address customers will use to find your store online. For example, if your store name is “Big Sale” your domain might be “www.bigsale.com”.

If you decide to leave Shopify, your domain remains registered to you. You can continue to use it or transfer it to another registrar. If you don’t want to keep your domain, you can let it expire when the registration period is up.

Shopify domains are registered with GoDaddy. If you decide to transfer your domain to another registrar, you’ll need to contact GoDaddy and initiate the transfer.

PRO TIP: If you leave Shopify, your domain will be suspended and you will no longer be able to access it. You will need to contact Shopify support to reactivate your domain.

Once you’ve decided what to do with your domain, there’s one last step: updating your DNS settings. DNS (domain name system) is what tells the internet where to find your website. When you change registrars, you need to update your DNS settings so that your domain points to your new registrar.

If you’re not sure how to do this, don’t worry! Your new registrar will usually have detailed instructions on how to update your DNS settings.

Conclusion: What Happens To My Domain If I Leave Shopify?

When you sign up for Shopify, you choose a unique domain name for your store.

If you decide to leave Shopify, your domain remains registered to you.
