What Is a Built-in Domain on Squarespace?

PRO TIP: Squarespace’s built-in domains are not to be used for email or website hosting. They are only to be used for domain forwarding.

A built-in domain is a domain that’s automatically set up and configured when you create a new site on Squarespace. You don’t need to set up or configure anything to use a built-in domain. Just create your site, and the domain will be ready to use.

There are two types of built-in domains: primary domains and secondary domains.

Primary domains are the main address for your site.

They’re automatically created when you start a new site on Squarespace, and they can’t be deleted. You can have multiple primary domains for different sites on Squarespace, but each site can only have one primary domain.

Secondary domains are additional addresses that you can use to point visitors to specific pages on your site. Unlike primary domains, you can delete secondary domains at any time. You can also have multiple secondary domains for different pages on the same site.

If you’re not sure which type of domain you need, check out our guide to choosing a domain name.

A built-in domain is a great way to get started with Squarespace if you don’t already have a domain name. If you already have a domain name, you can use it with Squarespace by connecting it to your site.
