What Is App Proxy in Shopify?

Last updated on October 2, 2022 @ 4:44 am

An application proxy is a layer 7 routing service that sits between a client and your Shopify store. When a client sends a request to your store, the proxy forwards the request to your Shopify server, then returns the response to the client.

The main benefit of using an app proxy is that it can offload some of the work that would normally be done by your Shopify server. For example, if you’re using an app proxy to serve static content (like images or CSS files), then your Shopify server doesn’t need to generate those files on each request. This can free up resources on your server, and make your store faster overall.

PRO TIP: If you are using the Shopify app, do not enable the App Proxy feature. This will proxify all requests made by the app and could potentially leak sensitive information.

Another benefit of using an app proxy is that it can provide extra security for your store. For example, if you’re using an app proxy to serve private content (like customer information), then only the proxy has access to that content. Your Shopify server never sees the private data, so it’s less likely to be compromised.

App proxies are a powerful tool for optimizing and securing your Shopify store. If you’re not using one already, consider adding an app proxy to your stack.
