UpWork bills clients in two ways: Fixed Price and Hourly. Fixed Price billing is the most common billing methodology used on UpWork. Fixed Price billing means that clients are charged a fixed amount for every job completed. Hourly billing is also used on UpWork, but it is less common.

PRO TIP: If you are not careful, billing method in Upwork can be very confusing. Make sure that you understand the difference between hourly and fixed-price contracts before selecting a billing method. Otherwise, you may end up paying more than you expect!

Hourly billing means that clients are charged based on the number of hours they work on a project. Clients are not charged for the first hour they work on a project, and they are only charged for the hours they work on a project after they have been approved by the client.
