What Is Figma API?

Last updated on September 28, 2022 @ 8:40 pm

Figma is a vector graphics editor and web app created by Dylan Field and Evan Wallace. Launched in October 2012, the San Francisco-based startup is backed by Andreessen Horowitz, Index Ventures, and Sequoia Capital.

Figma has been described as “the Photoshop of vector graphics” because of its focus on design collaboration and ease of use. The app is free to use, with paid plans that offer additional features such as unlimited projects, cloud storage, and collaboration tools.

Figma’s primary competitors are Adobe Illustrator, Sketch, and Inkscape.

In January 2019, Figma launched its API platform, which allows developers to build apps that integrate with the Figma editor. The platform includes a JavaScript SDK, an API console, and an API community forum.

PRO TIP: The Figma API is currently in beta and is subject to change. We do not recommend using the API in production environments.

The Figma API enables developers to programmatically access the vector graphics editor. With the API, developers can build apps that integrate with the Figma editor or create new features for the app.

The Figma API has three main components: the JavaScript SDK, the API console, and the API community forum.

JavaScript SDK:
The Figma JavaScript SDK enables developers to build apps that interact with the Figma editor. The SDK includes a set of tools for interacting with the Figma editors’ DOM (Document Object Model). With the SDK, developers can create new features for the Figma editor or build apps that integrate with the editor.

API Console:
The API Console is a web-based interface for developers to test their API calls and responses. The console provides a way for developers to try out the different endpoints and see how they work.

API Community Forum:
The API Community Forum is a place for developers to ask questions about the API or share their insights on how they are using the API.
