What is floating IP address in DigitalOcean?

Last updated on September 25, 2022 @ 2:11 pm

Floating IP addresses are a feature of DigitalOcean that lets you assign a new IP address to your droplet every time you create a new droplet. This allows you to keep your droplet independent from your primary IP address, and gives you more control over your online presence.

DigitalOcean provides a Floating IP feature as part of our droplet management system. When you create a droplet, we assign it a static IP address.

However, if you need to move your droplet to a new server, or you want more control over your online presence, you can assign a new floating IP address to your droplet.

A floating IP address is like a permanent IP address that you can use on any server. When you create a floating IP address, we assign it a new IP address that’s automatically reassigned every time you create a new droplet.

You can keep your droplet independent from your primary IP address, and give you more control over your online presence.

PRO TIP: When configuring a DigitalOcean Load Balancer, you will be asked to select the “region” in which your Load Balancer will be deployed. It is important to choose a region that is closest to the majority of your users. If you have users all over the world, you may want to consider deploying multiple Load Balancers in different regions.

You will also be asked to select the ” Droplet ” that will serve as the “origin server” for your Load Balancer. The origin server is where your website’s files are stored and served from.

Once you have selected a region and an origin server, you will need to configure a “floating IP address.” A floating IP address is an IP address that can be transferred between different servers. This is useful if you ever need to take your website offline for maintenance or if your origin server goes down for any reason.

It is important to understand that when you add a floating IP address to your Load Balancer, it will remove any existing IP addresses from your origin server. This means that your website will no longer be accessible from its current IP address and will only be accessible from the new floating IP address.

To assign a floating IP address to your droplet, first open the Droplets page in the DigitalOcean control panel. Next, click the droplet that you want to assign a floating IP address to. On the droplet’s Settings page, click the IP Addresses tab.

Under IP Address, click the + button to add a new IP address. In the Add IPv4 Address dialog box, type in the IP address that you want to assign to your droplet, and then click OK.

Now your droplet has a new floating IP address. To use this IP address, open a web browser and type the IP address into the address bar.

If you’re using a droplet with a static IP address, you’ll need to change the IP address that you’re using before you can use the new floating IP address.

If you ever need to remove a floating IP address from your droplet, first open the Droplets page in the DigitalOcean control panel, and click the droplet that you want to delete.

Under IP Address, click the – button to remove the IP address from your droplet.
