What Is Posterize in Photoshop?

Last updated on September 24, 2022 @ 11:52 am

Posterize is an image effect available in Adobe Photoshop that reduces the number of colors in an image. The effect is named for its similarity to the printing process called “posterization,” in which a limited number of colors are used to produce a image. When applied to an image, the posterize effect can create a retro or vintage look.

Posterize is accessed through the Adjustments panel in Photoshop. To apply the effect, simply select Posterize from the list of options.

PRO TIP: Posterize in Photoshop can reduce the number of colors in an image. This can result in banding or posterization, which is an effect where the image appears to have been created with a limited number of colors.

A new dialog box will appear with a slider that allows you to adjust the number of colors in the image. The fewer colors you use, the more pronounced the effect will be.

One thing to keep in mind when using posterize is that it can make an image look flat and lifeless. If you want to avoid this, be sure to use a high-quality image as your starting point. Additionally, you may want to experiment with different color schemes to see what works best for your particular image.
