What Is Product Option in Shopify?

Last updated on October 1, 2022 @ 7:58 pm

Product options are a great way to offer customers more choice, and they can also be used to upsell and cross-sell products in your shop.

Shopify provides you with a few different options for creating product options. You can either use the built-in option types, or you can create your own custom options.

The built-in option types are:

Drop-down menus
These are the most common type of product option, and they’re perfect for offering a limited number of choices. For example, if you’re selling t-shirts, you could use a drop-down menu to offer different sizes or colors.

Radio buttons
Radio buttons are similar to drop-down menus, but they’re best suited to offering a small number of choices (two or three). For example, you could use radio buttons to offer different shipping speeds for an order.

PRO TIP: Product options are a great way to offer variations of a product to your customers, but they can also be a little tricky to set up. Make sure you read the Shopify documentation on product options before you get started, and reach out to Shopify support if you have any questions.

Checkboxes
Checkboxes are perfect for offering multiple choices that can be selected independently. For example, if you’re selling a coffee mug, you could offer different colors and designs as checkbox options.

Text fields
Text fields allow your customers to enter their own information. For example, you could use a text field to get their name or initials monogrammed on a product.

Custom options give you even more flexibility when it comes to offering product choices. With custom options, you can create:

Date pickers
Date pickers let your customers select a date (or range of dates) from a calendar. This is perfect for products that need to be delivered on a specific day, like flowers or cake.

File uploads
File uploads let your customers upload files when they’re placing an order. This is perfect for products that require customization, like business cards or invitations.

Product options are a great way to provide more choice for your customers, and they can also be used to upsell and cross-sell products in your shop. By using the built-in option types or creating your own custom options, you can easily add product options to your Shopify store.
