Shopify is a Canadian e-commerce company headquartered in Ottawa, Ontario. It is also the name of its proprietary e-commerce platform for online stores and retail point-of-sale systems. Shopify offers online retailers a suite of services “including payments, marketing, shipping and customer engagement tools to simplify the process of running an online store for small merchants.

Shopify was founded in 2004 by Tobias Lütke, Daniel Weinand, and Scott Lake after attempting to open Snowdevil, an online store for snowboarding equipment. Unhappy with existing e-commerce products available at the time, Lütke and his co-founders decided to build their own.

Shopify launched its platform in 2006. Lütke is the CEO of Shopify and has been since 2008.

By 2012, Shopify had surpassed one million active users, growing to over $100 million in monthly sales by 2013. In 2014, Shopify went public on the New York Stock Exchange and became Canada’s largest ever software IPO at the time, raising $131 million.
