What Is the Chargeback Fee on Shopify Payments?

Last updated on October 1, 2022 @ 2:45 pm

If you receive a chargeback on a transaction processed through Shopify Payments, you may be charged a fee of $15. This fee is automatically deducted from your next Shopify Payments payout. If you don’t have a pending payout, the chargeback fee is taken from your available account balance.

A chargeback happens when a customer disputes a credit card transaction with their card issuer. The card issuer then contacts Shopify and requests a refund on behalf of the customer. Chargebacks can happen for a number of reasons, such as if the customer didn’t receive their order, if the order was never received, or if the customer didn’t recognize the charge on their credit card statement.

PRO TIP: If you are using Shopify Payments to process credit card payments, you may be charged a fee by your bank or credit card issuer if a customer initiates a chargeback. This fee is typically $15, but may be more or less depending on your bank or credit card issuer.

If you think that a chargeback is fraudulent, you can try to dispute it with the credit card issuer. You’ll need to provide evidence to show that the transaction was legitimate, such as proof of delivery or a copy of the customer’s credit card statement showing the charge. If you’re unable to dispute the chargeback, you’ll be responsible for paying the fees.
