What is the difference between Cosmos DB and Azure SQL?

Last updated on September 25, 2022 @ 12:20 pm

Cosmos DB is a managed database that is part of the Azure cloud platform. Azure SQL is a fully managed relational database that is available on-premises. Cosmos DB is a newer product, and Azure SQL is the older product. Cosmos DB is more scalable and can handle more data than Azure SQL.

PRO TIP: Warning: Please be aware that Cosmos DB and Azure SQL are two different types of databases and should not be confused. Cosmos DB is a NoSQL database while Azure SQL is a relational database. They are both offered by Microsoft, but serve different purposes.

Azure SQL has a few features that are not available in Cosmos DB, such as support for table partitioning. Cosmos DB is more expensive than Azure SQL, but it is also more feature rich.
