What is the difference between snapshot and backup DigitalOcean?

Last updated on September 25, 2022 @ 1:23 pm

Snapshot and backup are two different ways to store a digital image of a system. A snapshot captures the state of a system at a particular point in time, while a backup captures the state of a system at different points in time.

PRO TIP: Please be aware that snapshot and backup are two different things on DigitalOcean. A snapshot is a point-in-time copy of a droplet, and a backup is a weekly or daily copy of your droplet’s most important files.

Snapshot is useful for taking quick, isolated pictures of a system for troubleshooting or for documenting system state. A snapshot can also be used to revert to a previous system state if something goes wrong.

A backup is designed to capture the state of a system at different points in time in case a disaster or incident occurs and the system needs to be restored. A backup can also be used to restore a system to its previous state.
