In the late 1980s, Adobe co-founder John Knoll was working on a new computer graphics program for Industrial Light & Magic, the special effects company owned by George Lucas. His brother, Thomas Knoll, was a computer scientist who had developed a simple program for displaying grayscale images on monochrome screens. John showed his brother’s program to Adobe’s CEO, John Warnock, who saw its potential and asked Thomas to develop it further.

Thomas Knoll continued to work on the program, adding features like color support and layers. He named the program “Photoshop” after the term used by photographers for the darkroom process of manipulating photos. Photoshop 1.0 was released in 1990 and quickly became the industry standard for image editing.

Today, Photoshop is an incredibly powerful tool used by graphic designers, web designers, photographers, and artists around the world. It’s hard to imagine a world without Photoshop!
