Shopify is a great platform for online stores, but there are a few things to be aware of before using it. First, Shopify’s transaction fees are higher than some other platforms, so you’ll need to factor that into your pricing. Second, Shopify doesn’t offer certain features that other platforms do, such as the ability to directly sell digital products. Finally, Shopify’s customer support isn’t always the quickest or most helpful, so you may need to be prepared to troubleshoot issues on your own.

Shopify was founded in 2004 by Tobias Lütke, Daniel Weinand, and Scott Lake after attempting to open Snowdevil, an online store for snowboarding equipment. Shopify was initially written in Ruby on Rails by Lütke. The company received its initial seed funding following a successful Kickstarter campaign in February 2010. Shopify has raised $122 million in total equity funding, and $100 million in debt financing.

In May 2015, Shopify acquired Select Start Studios Inc., an Ottawa-based mobile app development studio led by Chris Grubb, as its first major acquisition. In November 2016, Shopify partnered with Amazon to allow merchants to sell their products on Amazon.com. In June 2018, Shopify acquired Toronto-based warehouse management software company Kit CRM Inc..

Shopify went public on the New York Stock Exchange on May 21st, 2015 under the symbol SHOP.
