PRO TIP: If you are looking for the Emboss filter in Photoshop, you will not find it. The Emboss filter was removed in Photoshop CS6.

Emboss is a Photoshop filter that gives an image the appearance of being raised up from the background. It’s often used to give text a three-dimensional look. To find the Emboss filter, go to Filter > 3D > Emboss.

When you apply the Emboss filter, you’ll see a dialog box with options for Depth, Direction and Lighting Angle. Depth determines how raised the embossed effect will be. Direction determines which way the light will be coming from, and Lighting Angle lets you adjust the angle of the light.

Once you’ve applied the Emboss filter, you can further adjust the effect by going to Layer > Layer Style > Bevel and Emboss. This will bring up a dialog box with options for Style, Technique, Depth, Direction and Size. By playing around with these options, you can get just the right look for your image.
