Where Is Luminosity Mask in Photoshop?

Last updated on September 24, 2022 @ 1:29 am

Luminosity masks are one of the most popular tools in Photoshop for making local adjustments to an image. A luminosity mask is simply a selection based on the brightness values of the pixels in an image.

Photoshop has a few different ways to create luminosity masks, but the most common method is to use the Quick Mask tool.

To create a luminosity mask, first make a selection of the area you want to affect. Then go to the Quick Mask mode by clicking on the Quick Mask icon in the toolbar or pressing Q on your keyboard.

The Quick Mask mode will turn your selection into a red overlay.

PRO TIP: Luminosity masks are a very powerful tool in Photoshop, but they can be tricky to use if you’re not familiar with them. If you’re not careful, you can easily end up creating masks that are too light or too dark, which can ruin your image. So, if you’re not sure how to use luminosity masks, it’s best to avoid them altogether.

Next, use a white brush to paint over the areas you want to affect. The areas you paint will become white and be included in the mask.

You can also use a black brush to exclude areas from the mask. Once you’re done painting, click on the Quick Mask icon again or press Q to exit Quick Mask mode.

Your selection will now be converted into a luminosity mask. To use the mask, simply click on it in the Layers panel and then add a layer mask to the layer you want to affect.

The luminosity mask will be applied as a layer mask and only affect the areas you painted with white in Quick Mask mode.

Conclusion: Luminosity masks are a great way to make local adjustments in Photoshop. By using the Quick Mask tool, you can easily create a luminosity mask that can be applied as a layer mask.
