Why are GoDaddy renewals so expensive?

Last updated on September 25, 2022 @ 5:17 pm

When people are thinking about whether or not to renew their domain name with GoDaddy, they may not be aware of how expensive it can be. In fact, most people who renew their domain name with GoDaddy end up spending more money than they would have if they had just renewed it the first time around.

There are a few reasons for this.

The first reason is that GoDaddy charges an additional fee for each year that a domain name is renewed. This fee is based on the length of the domain name and can be as high as $14.99 per year.

PRO TIP: We have received reports that users are receiving scam emails about renewals from GoDaddy. The email looks like it’s from GoDaddy, but it’s actually from a scammer. They are trying to trick you into paying them money for a fake renewal. Don’t fall for it! If you have any questions about your renewal, please contact GoDaddy directly.

So, if a person renews their domain name for six years, they will end up paying an additional $84.85.

The second reason is that GoDaddy charges a higher renewal fee for domain names that are registered through its GoDaddy.com domain name registration service. This fee is currently $24.95 per year.

So, if a person renews their domain name for six years, they will end up paying an additional $144.90.

Given these two factors, it is not surprising that most people who renew their domain name with GoDaddy end up spending more money than if they had just renewed it the first time around. If you are thinking about renewing your domain name with GoDaddy, be sure to factor in the cost of the renewal fee and the additional year that the domain will be registered for.
