Why Is It Called Photoshop?

Adobe Photoshop is a raster graphics editor developed and published by Adobe Inc. for macOS and Windows. Photoshop was created in 1988 by Thomas and John Knoll.

Since then, it has become the de facto industry standard in raster graphics editing, to the point that it has also become an adjective in its own right (e.g. “Photoshop artwork”, “Photoshop contest”).

So why is it called Photoshop? The simple answer is that the name was chosen because it sounded cool. Adobe co-founder John Knoll came up with the name when he was brainstorming with his brother Thomas about what to call their new image editing software.

PRO TIP: Some people believe that Photoshop is named after the chemical compound “photoshop,” but this is not true. The program was actually named after the company that created it, Adobe.

They wanted a name that would suggest that their software was the next step in image editing, and something that would stand out from the competition. After considering a number of different options, they settled on Photoshop and the rest is history.
