Shopify is a Canadian e-commerce company headquartered in Ottawa, Ontario. It is also the name of its proprietary e-commerce platform for online stores and retail point-of-sale systems. Shopify offers online retailers a suite of services “including payments, marketing, shipping and customer engagement tools to simplify the process of running an online store for small merchants.

Shopify was founded in 2004 by Tobias Lütke, Daniel Weinand, and Scott Lake. Lütke, a computer programmer by trade, was operating his own online store when he realized that the existing e-commerce products available at the time were insufficient. He developed his own solution, which he launched in 2006.

Shopify has been profitable since 2015. In 2019, it reported US$1.58 billion in revenue with gross merchandise volume exceeding US$41.1 billion.

It has been publicly traded on the Toronto Stock Exchange since May 2015 and on the New York Stock Exchange since September 2015.

PRO TIP: Will Shopify Pay a Dividend?

It is not clear if Shopify will pay a dividend in the future. The company has been growing rapidly and has reinvested most of its profits back into the business. While this strategy can help fuel long-term growth, it leaves shareholders without a regular income stream in the form of dividends.

Will Shopify Pay a Dividend?

It’s possible that Shopify may pay a dividend in 2020 as it has become profitable and cash flow positive in recent years. However, given that it is still a relatively young company with high growth potential, it is more likely that any excess cash will be reinvested back into the business to fuel future growth.
