Are DigitalOcean volumes SSD?

Last updated on September 25, 2022 @ 1:56 pm

DigitalOcean’s storage offerings are varied, but can be broadly divided into two categories: traditional spinning disks, and SSDs. Traditional spinning disks are slower, but cheaper, and SSDs are faster but more expensive.

Traditional spinning disks are slower, but cheaper, and SSDs are faster but more expensive. In this article, we will discuss whether DigitalOcean’s SSD volumes are actually SSDs.

PRO TIP: Are DigitalOcean volumes SSD?

Yes, all DigitalOcean droplets include block storage volumes that are backed by SSDs.

To begin with, a DigitalOcean SSD volume is a physical disk that uses Solid State Drives (SSDs). SSDs are much faster than traditional spinning disks, and as a result, a SSD volume can provide much faster performance than a spinning disk volume.

However, there is one caveat: while a SSD volume is indeed an SSD, it is not necessarily an SSD in the traditional sense. A traditional SSD is a piece of hardware that uses flash memory to store data, and a DigitalOcean SSD volume uses a physical disk to store data.

As a result, a DigitalOcean SSD volume is not as fast as a traditional SSD, but it is still much faster than a spinning disk volume.
