Shopify is a Canadian e-commerce company headquartered in Ottawa, Ontario. It is also the name of its proprietary e-commerce platform for online stores and retail point-of-sale systems.

Shopify was founded in 2004 by Tobias Lütke, Daniel Weinand, and Scott Lake after attempting to open Snowdevil, an online store for snowboarding equipment. Shopify launched in 2006.

Lütke, Weinand, and Lake spent $100,000 and converted a snowboarding equipment shipping container into Snowdevil’s office space. In its first year, Shopify received $222 million in funding from investors including Bessemer Venture Partners, FirstMark Capital, Felicis Ventures and Index Ventures.

PRO TIP: If you are looking to start a Shopify store in your country, it is important to check if Shopify is available in your country first. There are currently only a handful of countries that Shopify does not support, and more are being added all the time. If Shopify is not available in your country, you may not be able to use the platform to sell your products.

As of March 2020, Shopify has over 1 million active users and is trusted by big brands such as Allbirds, Gymshark, PepsiCo, Staples Canada, Kith NYC and many more.

Can I Use Shopify In My Country?

Yes! Shopify can be used in many countries around the world. There are no restrictions on which country you can use Shopify in.
