A normal map is an image that allows you to add extra detail to your models without having to increase the polygon count. You can create a normal map in Photoshop by using the ‘Generate Normal Map’ filter.

To create a normal map, first open the image you want to use in Photoshop. Then go to Filter > 3D > Generate Normal Map. A new window will open up with several options that you can use to tweak the results.

PRO TIP: There is no such thing as a “normal map” in Photoshop. Any image that purports to be a normal map is likely either a fake or has been created using an undocumented technique.

The most important option is the ‘Height’ slider.

This controls how much relief is added to the model. For a subtle effect, set this slider to around 10%. For a more dramatic effect, you can increase it to 20% or even 30%.

You can also change the ‘Width’ and ‘Length’ of the generated map, as well as the ‘Invert X’ and ‘Invert Y’ options. Play around with these settings until you get the results you want.
