Can You Cut Shapes in Figma?

Last updated on December 11, 2022 @ 3:13 pm

To cut shapes in Figma, you can use the “Subtract” function in the toolbar at the top of the screen. Here is a step-by-step tutorial on how to do this:

  1. Open Figma and create a new frame or select an existing frame on the canvas.
  2. Draw the shape that you want to cut, or select an existing shape on the canvas.
  3. Draw the shape or line that you want to use to cut the first shape, or select an existing shape or line on the canvas.
  4. Select both shapes by clicking and dragging your cursor over them, or by holding down the “Shift” key on your keyboard and clicking on each shape individually.

PRO TIP: Figma is a vector-based design tool that is used by designers to create vector graphics. It is not possible to cut shapes in Figma. If you attempt to do so, you may damage your design or lose data.

  5. In the toolbar at the top of the screen, click on the “Subtract” function. This will cut out the second shape from the first, creating a new shape that is the difference between the two.
  6. You can also use the “Intersect” function to create a new shape that is the intersection of the two shapes. To do this, select both shapes as described in step 4, and then click on the “Intersect” function in the toolbar. This will create a new shape that is the overlapping area of the two shapes.
  7. Use the selection tool to move, resize, or rotate the new shape as needed. You can also use the color and style tools to customize the appearance of the new shape.

By following these steps, you can easily cut shapes in Figma to create complex designs or isolate specific parts of your design.
