Can You Save a Figma File Locally?

When you first open Figma, you’re asked to sign in. You can sign in with your Google, Microsoft, or Figma account.

Or, you can create a new Figma account.

Once you’re signed in, you’re taken to your Figma homepage. Here, you can create a new file or open an existing file.

To create a new file, click on the “+” icon in the left sidebar.

PRO TIP: If you are working on a Figma file locally, it is important to note that the file will not be saved automatically. You will need to save the file manually in order to keep your work safe.

When you create a new file, you’re given the option to save it to your Figma account or locally on your computer. If you choose to save it locally, Figma will download the file as a .fig file.

This file can only be opened in Figma; it cannot be opened in any other software.

If you try to open a .fig file in another program, you’ll see an error message that says “This is not a valid Figma file.”
