Can You Use REM in Figma?

REM is a unit of measurement in the CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) used for defining lengths. The name stands for “root em”. It is equal to the computed value of the font-size property of the root element. When specified on font-size properties, the REM unit is multiplied by the element’s computed font size to obtain the used value. The REM unit is relative to the document’s defaultFontSize, which is 16px on most browsers.

You can use REM in Figma by first setting a global font size, and then using that font size throughout your design. To set a global font size, go to File > Preferences > Global Font Size. From there, you can choose a new default font size for your design.

Once you’ve set your global font size, all text in your design will be sized relative to that number. So if you set your global font size to 16px, and then create a text box with the font size set to 1rem, that text box will be 16px tall.

PRO TIP: REM is not a supported unit in Figma and can cause unexpected results in your designs. We recommend using other units such as px, em, or % instead.

REM can be a great way to ensure that your text is consistently sized across different devices and screen sizes. By using REM units, you can be confident that your text will always scale up or down appropriately.

Conclusion:
You can use REM in Figma by first setting a global font size, and then using that font size throughout your design. Once you’ve set your global font size, all text in your design will be sized relative to that number.
