Do I have to pay taxes on UpWork?

Last updated on September 24, 2022 @ 8:55 pm

UpWork is a web-based marketplace where businesses can find and contract with freelancers. Freelancers can find work through the site, and businesses can find freelancers who are skilled in specific tasks. Generally, freelancers are not considered employees of the businesses they work for, and so they are not generally subject to taxes on their income. However, there are a few exceptions to this rule.

PRO TIP: Yes, you are required to pay taxes on your earnings from Upwork. The IRS considers online earnings to be taxable income, and you will need to report this income on your tax return. You may also be subject to state and local taxes on your online earnings.

If a freelancer is considered to be an employee of a business, then they are generally subject to taxes on their income. Additionally, if a freelancer is considered to be self-employed, then they are generally subject to taxes on their income. UpWork does not specifically address either of these situations, so it is up to the freelancer and business to determine if they are considered employees or self-employed.
