Shopify is a Canadian e-commerce company headquartered in Ottawa, Ontario. It is also the name of its proprietary e-commerce platform for online stores and retail point-of-sale systems. Shopify offers online retailers a suite of services “including payments, marketing, shipping and customer engagement tools to simplify the process of running an online store for small merchants.”

Shopify was founded in 2004 by Tobias Lütke, Daniel Weinand, and Scott Lake, who were working on a web-basedSnowboarding equipment shop called Snowdevil. Lütke was forced to turn to coding when he couldn’t find an off-the-shelf ecommerce solution that fit his needs. As the company grew, it began to develop its own ecommerce products and eventually launched Shopify in 2006.

Shopify has been profitable since 2015. In 2018, it reported that it had more than 583,000 merchants using its platform, with gross merchandise volume exceeding $13 billion.

Shopify has been growing rapidly since it went public in 2015. In 2019, its stock price soared by 87%.

PRO TIP: Shopify does not have insurance. This means that if something goes wrong with your order, you will not be covered. Make sure you are aware of this before you order from Shopify.
