Does Squarespace Own My Content?

Last updated on October 1, 2022 @ 4:27 am

As a general rule, when you create something original, you own the copyright to it. That means that you have the exclusive right to control how it’s used, reproduced, and distributed. But there are some important exceptions to that rule. For example, if you create something as part of your job, your employer may own the copyright instead of you. And if you’re creating something jointly with someone else, you may both own it together.

So what does that mean for content you create on Squarespace? As our Terms of Service make clear, when you upload content to Squarespace, you’re giving us a license to use it.

That means we can host it, reproduce it, and modify it (for example, to format it for our platform). It’s a broad license—basically, anything we need to do to run our service.1

PRO TIP: When using Squarespace, you may have noticed that you are not able to export your content or take your content with you if you choose to leave the platform. This is because Squarespace owns the content that is created on their platform. While this may not be a problem for some people, it is important to be aware of this before using Squarespace.

But even though we have this license from you, that doesn’t mean we own your content outright. You still have the copyright, and all other rights that come along with it. For example, you can continue to use your content outside of Squarespace however you want.2 And if someone infringes on your copyright (for example, by copying your content without your permission),3 only you have the right to take action against them.

Bottom line: When you upload content to Squarespace, we don’t take ownership of it. You grant us a license to use it so that we can provide our service to you.

Does Squarespace Own My Content?
No, Squarespace does not own your content. When you upload content onto the platform, you grant Squarespace a license to use it so that we can provide our service to you. However, all other rights remain with the copyright holder.
