How Do I Add a Height Map in Photoshop?

Last updated on September 24, 2022 @ 12:55 am

Adding a height map in Photoshop is a relatively simple process that can be completed in just a few steps. First, open the image you want to edit in Photoshop. Next, go to the “Channels” tab and create a new channel. Now, using the paintbrush tool, paint your height map onto this new channel.

PRO TIP: Height maps should not be added in Photoshop as they can cause the program to crash. If you must add a height map, do so in a separate program and save the file as a Photoshop compatible format such as .tiff or .psd.

Once you’re satisfied with your work, go back to the “Layers” tab and create a new layer. Finally, simply select both the image layer and the height map layer and click “Merge Layers.” And that’s it!

Now that you know how to add a height map in Photoshop, why not try it out on your next project? With just a few simple steps, you can add depth and dimension to your images that would otherwise be impossible. So go ahead and give it a try!
