How Do I Change My DNS on Squarespace?

Last updated on October 1, 2022 @ 1:57 am

DNS, or Domain Name System, is a network protocol used to translate human-readable website names (like www.google.com) into numerical IP addresses that computers can understand. When you type a URL into your browser, your computer sends a DNS request to a DNS server, asking it to look up the IP address for that website. The server then responds with the IP address, and your browser connects to the website.

DNS is important because it makes the internet user experience more smooth and efficient. Imagine if you had to remember the IP address of every website you wanted to visit! DNS makes this process automatic.

Most internet service providers (ISPs) will provide you with a DNS server that you can use. However, you may want to use a different DNS server for a variety of reasons:

PRO TIP: If you are not familiar with DNS settings, we recommend that you contact your domain registrar or hosting provider for assistance. Incorrectly changing DNS settings can result in website downtime.
  • Your ISP’s DNS server may be slow, resulting in a longer wait time for websites to load.
  • Your ISP’s DNS server may be unreliable, resulting in errors when trying to load websites.
  • You may want to use a DNS service that provides extra features, such as security protection or content filtering.
