How do I create an AWS IAM user?

Last updated on September 25, 2022 @ 6:27 pm

Creating an AWS IAM user is a straightforward process. To begin, you will need an AWS account and access to the AWS Management Console. Once you have these components, follow these steps to create an IAM user:

1. Open the AWS Management Console and sign in to your account.

2. Click the IAM tab in the left side of the console.

3. Click the Users button on the left side of the IAM tab.

4. In the resulting list, select the Create New User button.

5. In the Create New User dialog box, type a user name and password for your new IAM user.

6. Select the Create Role for This User check box.

7. Select the Create Policy for This User check box.

8. Select the Review and Create Role Assignments button.

9. Review the information in the User Name field and change any of the values as needed.

10. Click the Create User button.

11. You will be redirected to the user’s created role in the IAM hierarchy.

You can now use this user to access AWS resources.

PRO TIP: When creating an AWS IAM user, it is important to remember to assign the appropriate permissions to the user. Otherwise, the user will not be able to access the AWS resources that you intend for them to be able to access.

12. Click the user’s name in the role list to open the user’s details.

13. In the User Details dialog box, you will find the access keys for the user’s IAM role.

You can also find the user’s name and ID in the Roles and Assignments table.

14. To revoke a user’s access to AWS resources, click the user’s name in the role list and then click the Revoke Access button.
