Making a Background in Illustrator

Making a background in Illustrator can be a bit challenging, but there are a few basic steps you can take to get started.

1. Choose a Background Pattern

The first step is to choose a background pattern. There are a number of different options available in Illustrator, and it can be helpful to browse through different collections or look for patterns that match your specific needs.

2. Create a New File

Next, you’ll need to create a new file in Illustrator. Make sure the file size is appropriate for your project, and choose a location on your hard drive where you want the file to be stored.

3. Import the Background Pattern

Now, you’ll need to import the background pattern you chose into your new file. To do this, select the pattern file from your computer and click on the “Import” button in the Illustrator toolbar.

PRO TIP: When creating a background in Adobe Illustrator, be sure to use the Rectangle Tool (M) to create a large rectangle that covers the entire artboard. To add color to the background, select the rectangle and go to Edit > Edit Colors > Recolor Artwork. From here, you can change the color of the background by choosing a new color from the palette.

4. Edit the Pattern

Once the pattern has been imported, you’ll need to edit it to make sure it’s the right size and format for your project. To do this, select the pattern layer in your Illustrator file and click on the “Edit” button in the toolbar.

5. Resize and Format the Pattern

Once the pattern has been edited, you’ll need to resize it to fit the size of your background file. To do this, use the “Resize” tool in the Illustrator toolbar and adjust the size of the pattern accordingly.

6. Add a Background Layer

Finally, you’ll need to add a new background layer to your Illustrator file. To do this, click on the “New Layer” button in the toolbar and choose “Background” from the list of available options.

Once you’ve completed these steps, your background should be ready to use in your project. Be sure to test it out before you begin working on your final project to make sure everything looks the way you want it to.
