How Do I Outline an Image in Canva?

Last updated on November 16, 2022 @ 2:19 pm

When it comes to adding text to images, we often want to give our photos a little extra something-something to make them stand out. Whether it’s for a social media post or a presentation, adding text can really help an image pop. And one of the best ways to add text is by using Canva’s Outline tool.

The Outline tool allows you to select an image and add a colored outline around the edge of the photo. This is perfect for adding text because it makes the photo more readable and also helps the text stand out from the background.

Plus, it’s super easy to use! Here’s how:

1. Select an image

First, you’ll need to choose an image that you want to add text to. Canva has millions of high-quality photos that you can choose from, so finding the perfect one for your project should be a breeze. Once you’ve found an image you like, click on it to select it.

2. Add text

Once your image is selected, click on the “Text” option in the upper left-hand corner of the screen. This will open up a new window where you can add your text. Type out whatever you want to say and then use the formatting options (found in the top toolbar) to change the font, size, color, etc.

3. Apply the ‘Glow’ effect tool

Once you’re happy with your text, it’s time to edit your design using the ‘glow’ effect. First, select ‘Edit image then search for shadow. Under shadow, you can find the “Glow” option.

When you select Glow, your subject will no longer appear outlined and will instead have a more haloed, heavenly appearance. To correct this, we must access the effect’s Settings. To access the configuration menu, simply click the Glow Button once more.

If you want to prevent people from seeing through the effect, turn the Transparency slider all the way to 100.

  • For the time being, it will be easier to edit if you keep the color black.
  • In order to create a smooth outline with the Glow effect, make sure the Scale is set to 0.
  • To find the optimal size for your subject, try adjusting the Size slider left and right.

You’ll see a few different options for thickness and color – play around with these until you find something that looks good with your image and text.

4. Save and share

Once you’re happy with how everything looks, click on the “Download” button in the upper right-hand corner of the screen. From here, you can save your image as a JPEG or PNG file or share it directly on social media. That’s all there is to it!
Canva is the best option for beginners who want to achieve the outline effect

Canva is a free online graphic design software with many templates. The software is available on both PC and Mac. This program is perfect for someone who is looking for an easy way to produce professional-looking graphics without the steep learning curve of other programs.

While the glow design option may not be the best option for creating complicated designs, it is great for producing a quick sketch or creating a list of guidelines. I personally use this tool to outline my illustrations because I find it easier to create a clean line that I can later erase before coloring in the final product.

PRO TIP: If you are not familiar with Canva, we recommend that you consult with a designer or another Canva user before attempting to outline an image. Outlining an image in Canva can be tricky, and if not done correctly, can result in a poor quality image.

Conclusion

Creating an outline effect on an image in Canva editor is quick, easy and fun. It’s also a great way to make your images stand out and attract attention.

If you are familiar with Canva and a little tech savvy, then this is a great tool and will allow you to do some cool things with images. Editing out all the middle colors on an image leaving just the outline around it, or creating patterns or graphics with the outline can be fun and fashionable when using the right images.
