How Do I Unlock Aspect Ratio in Photoshop?

Last updated on September 23, 2022 @ 11:59 pm

Aspect Ratio is the proportional relationship between the width and height of an image. It is typically expressed as two numbers separated by a colon, such as 4:3 or 16:9.

Images with an aspect ratio of 4:3 are generally considered to be standard definition, while those with an aspect ratio of 16:9 are considered to be high definition. Images with a different aspect ratio, such as 2.35:1 or 1:1, are usually considered to be special formats.

Photoshop supports three different ways of changing the aspect ratio of an image: Cropping, Resizing, and Canvas Size.

Cropping

Cropping is the most common way to change the aspect ratio of an image. To crop an image in Photoshop, select the Crop tool from the Tools palette or press C on your keyboard.

Then, drag the crop handles to resize the image. When you’re satisfied with the cropping, press Enter (Windows) or Return (Mac) on your keyboard to apply the changes.

PRO TIP: If you are not familiar with Photoshop, it is best to avoid trying to unlock the aspect ratio. Doing so could result in distorted images.

Resizing

Resizing is another way to change the aspect ratio of an image. To resize an image in Photoshop, select the Image Size command from the Image menu. In theImage Size dialog box, enter a new value for either the width or height. As long as the “Constrain Proportions” option is selected, changing one value will automatically change the other so that the aspect ratio is maintained.

Canvas Size

Canvas Size is a less common way to change the aspect ratio of an image.

To change the canvas size of an image in Photoshop, select the Canvas Size command fromthe Image menu. In the Canvas Size dialog box, enter a new value for eitherthe width or height. As long as the “Relative” option is selected, changing one value will automatically change the other so that the aspect ratio is maintained.
