How Do You Chargeback on Shopify?

When you make a purchase using a credit or debit card, you have the legal right to dispute any unauthorized or incorrect charges within 120 days of the date of the transaction. This is called a chargeback. Chargebacks are processed by your card issuer and can be initiated for a number of reasons, including fraud, incorrect pricing, or merchandise that was never received.

If you need to file a chargeback with your card issuer, you will first need to contact the merchant and attempt to resolve the issue directly with them. If you are unable to reach a resolution, you can then contact your card issuer and begin the chargeback process.

PRO TIP: If you are a victim of fraud, you may be able to get your money back by filing a chargeback with your credit card company. However, there are some things to be aware of before you do this.

First, chargebacks are not always successful. Your credit card company may not side with you if the merchant disputes the charge.

Second, even if your chargeback is successful, you may still be responsible for any fees associated with the transaction, such as shipping costs.

Finally, filing a chargeback can damage your relationship with the merchant. If you frequently file chargebacks, the merchant may eventually refuse to do business with you.

The first step in filing a chargeback is to gather all relevant documentation, including your original purchase receipt, shipping documentation, and any correspondence with the merchant. You will then need to contact your card issuer and provide them with this documentation. They will review your case and determine if a chargeback is warranted.

If the card issuer finds in your favor, they will reverse the charges and credited back to your account. The merchant will then have the opportunity to dispute the chargeback, at which point the card issuer will make a final determination. If the merchant does not dispute the chargeback or if they are unsuccessful in doing so, they will be responsible for paying the charges back to the card issuer.

Chargebacks can be time-consuming and complicated, but they are a valuable consumer protection tool. If you have been the victim of fraud or an incorrect charge, don’t hesitate to file a chargeback with your card issuer.
