When you first open Figma, you’re prompted to choose between creating a new file or opening an existing one. If you choose to create a new file, you’re given the option to start from scratch or use a template. For this tutorial, we’ll be starting from scratch.

Once you’ve selected your workspace, you’ll be taken to the Figma interface. The interface is divided into three sections: the canvas, the editor, and the properties panel.

The canvas is where you’ll do all of your design work. The editor is where you can edit vector shapes and text. And the properties panel is where you can change the properties of your selected element.

To create a new frame, click the “+” icon in the left sidebar. Then, select “Frame” from the drop-down menu. You can also use the keyboard shortcut “CMD + F”.

When you create a new frame, you’re given the option to name it and choose its size. For this tutorial, we’ll be creating a mobile frame with the name “App Design.”

PRO TIP: If you are not careful, clearing all prototype connections in Figma can result in losing your work. Make sure to save your work before clearing any prototype connections.

Once you’ve created your frame, you can start adding elements to it. To do so, select the “Rectangle” tool from the toolbar on the left. Then, click and drag on the canvas to create a rectangle.

You can also use the keyboard shortcut “R” to quickly select the Rectangle tool. To change the properties of your rectangle, such as its color or size, select it and then make your changes in the properties panel on the right.
