How do you create a path in Illustrator?

Last updated on September 24, 2022 @ 7:14 pm

In Illustrator, a path is a vector graphic that you can use to create illustrations, logos, and graphics. You can create a path by clicking the Paths button in the Tools panel, or by using the Path Selection tool (listed under the Pencil tool in the toolbar).

To create a straight line path, click and hold the mouse button down while you drag the mouse. To create a curve or freeform path, drag the mouse around the desired path. You can also use the keyboard shortcuts for the Path Selection tool:

PRO TIP: When creating a path in Illustrator, be sure to use the Pen tool, and not the Freeform Pen tool. The Freeform Pen tool can create unpredictable results.

To create a straight line path, hold down the left mouse button and drag.

To create a curve, hold down the left mouse button and drag while pressing the Shift key.

To create a freeform path, hold down the left mouse button and drag while pressing the Control key.
