How do you make a watercolor texture in Illustrator?

Making a watercolor texture in Illustrator is really simple. First, create a new Illustrator file. Next, open the Texture menu and select New Textured Map.

In the New Textured Map dialog box, select the Rgb option and set the output color to black. Click OK.

Next, select the Rectangular Marquee Tool (M) and draw a rectangle around the area you want to texture. Next, select the Add New Texture button (bottom right of the Texture panel) and browse to the file you created in Step 1.

PRO TIP: When using the watercolor texture in Illustrator, be sure to set the transparency to ‘multiply’ so that the colors will blend together correctly. Also, be sure to use a light touch when painting with the watercolor brush – too much pressure will result in an overly-saturated image.

Finally, click OK.

Now, you’ll see the texture applied to your object. To change the texture, just select the object and click the Texture panel button (top right of the window).

You can also change the texture’s intensity by adjusting the Texture Blending slider.
