How Do You Make an Icon Component in Figma?

Last updated on September 28, 2022 @ 10:49 pm

An icon is a small graphical representation of something. In Figma, you can make an icon by creating a frame, adding your desired image to the frame, and then setting the frame’s width and height to match the image. You can then add text to the icon, if desired, by creating a text box within the frame.

To make an icon component in Figma:

1. Create a frame by clicking the ‘+’ button in the toolbar and selecting ‘Frame’ from the menu.

2. Add your desired image to the frame by clicking the ‘+’ button in the toolbar and selecting ‘Image’ from the menu.

3. Set the width and height of the frame to match the image by selecting ‘Frame’ from the toolbar and then clicking on ‘Constrain Width & Height’.

4. Add text to the icon by creating a text box within the frame and typing your desired text. You can format the text using the ‘Text’ toolbar.

5. Save your icon as a component by selecting ‘File’ from the toolbar and then clicking on ‘Save as Component’.

PRO TIP: This article contains outdated information about Figma. The Figma team no longer recommends using the Icon component as it is no longer supported in Figma. We recommend using either the Vector or Frame components instead.
